Monday December 12, 2011 – SBWL will host its Annual Dinner at the Canary Hotel.
We are excited announce our keynote speaker for the Annual Dinner, Stanford Law School Professor and author Barbara Babcock. Professor Babcock was the first woman hired and tenured at Stanford Law School. She founded the women’s legal history biography project. Professor Babcock is known nationwide for her research into the history of women in the legal profession and, in particular, for her research into the life of California’s pioneering female lawyer, Clara Foltz.
In 2011, Professor Babcock released ”Woman Lawyer: The Trials of Clara Foltz.” Clara Foltz sued for the right to attend California’s only law school in the 1800s. She lobbied the Governor to sign the Women’s Lawyer’s Bill–legislation entitling women to practice law. She then became first woman admitted to practice law on the West Coast. In California, Ms. Foltz became the first female deputy district attorney, the first women to serve as legislative counsel, the first women to prosecute a murder case, to hold statewide office, and become a notary public. Ms. Folz tried cases in court — before women were even permitted to serve on juries or vote. Ms. Foltz was also the founder of the public defender movement.
Join us on December 12th to hear Professor Babcock speak!
