SBWLF’s awards scholarships to outstanding law students who have and continue to promote and advance women’s rights and gender equality in the community. A mixer at Intermezzo (819 Anacapa St.) from 5 – 7 pm to support the Foodbank ‘s Picnic in the Park program which provides food during the summer for children who will not receive their free or reduced cost lunch while school is out of session. Help the hungry children in our county!

The annual mixer of the Santa Barbara Women Lawyers Association and the Women Lawyers of Ventura County will be held Wednesday June 3, 2015 at the Carpinteria Women’s Club from 6 – 8 PM. Edwina Barvosa, associate professor in the department of feminist studies at UC Santa Barbara, will speak on unconscious bias and strategies toward potential remedies. The cost is $10 MCLE plus $30 for members, $35 for non-members.Wine, hors d’oeuvres, networking and MCLE!

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schrek hosted a reception featuring a presentation by Drs. Nancy O’Reilly and Lois Phillips on unconscious bias. All proceeds of the event were donated to the Santa Barbara Women Lawyers Foundation.

Renee J. Nordstrand was honored as 2014′s Deborah Talmage Attorney of the Year.
Since she was sworn-in to the California State Bar, Ms. Nordstrand has been a constant presence in our legal community. She promptly joined Consumer Attorneys of California, followed closely by Santa Barbara Women Lawyers, and has been a contributing member of multiple other legal organizations. Ms. Nordstrand has anchored mentoring circles since 2000, and opened up a third circle just this year. From 1998 to 2011, Ms. Nordstrand initiated the evaluation and then the establishment of the Children’s Waiting Room at the Santa Barbara Courthouse, following the project through to completion. Ms. Nordstrand served on the SBWL Board of Directors for multiple years, and is responsible for many improvements in our organization.
Our guest speaker was Beth H. Parker, Chief Legal Counsel of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. Ms. Parker discussed two recent Supreme Court cases, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby (contraception and religious accommodation) and McCullen v. Coakley (buffer zones at abortion clinics).
